It required a very delicate three hour operation to completely remove the eye ball itself, as well as the surrounding tissue. Some of the forebrow bone was also removed. The resulting hole was filled with transplanted fatty tissue, to prevent sinkage. The muscles in the immediate area where removed, and the gap sutured together. Then the entire area was closed and bandaged. Upon recovery, the patient was found to have a complete lack of depth perception. There was also a fair amount of pain, controlled by a regular dosage of Tylenol.
